Pepe Origin
Pepe the Frog is a character from the comic series "Boy's Club" by Matt Furie, first published in 2005. The character started out as one of the comic's four main characters, living with his three anthropomorphic animal roommates. Pepe is often depicted as a laid-back, easy-going, chilled-out frog.
The character became a meme on platforms like 4chan, Reddit, and various internet communities. The most popular iteration of the Pepe meme is the "Feels Good Man" image, which comes from a comic where Pepe is urinating with his pants around his ankles, explaining to one of his roommates that it "feels good man."
Over time, the character was adopted by a range of internet communities and its meaning evolved depending on the context. In some instances, it was used to represent various states of emotion, like sadness ("Feels Bad Man" or "Sad Frog") and smugness ("Smug Frog"). Unfortunately, in the mid-2010s, Pepe the Frog also became associated with various online hate groups, which led the Anti-Defamation League to classify it as a hate symbol in 2016. This use of the character was in direct opposition to the intentions of its creator, Matt Furie, who attempted to reclaim the image through various means, including killing off the character in one of his comics and starting a "Save Pepe" campaign to return the character to its original, positive meaning.
